The Connection Between Gut Health and Radiant Skin

We’ve all heard that saying, “You are what you eat,” right? It’s usually used to make us think twice about our diets in relation to our fitness goals, but we like to use it when we talk about our skin goals.

You could slather your face in the most expensive moisturizers on the market, but if you have an unhealthy gut, your skin will be the first to let you know!

Ever wonder why nutritionists seem to stress gut health more than anything else? Without going complete health-nerd on you here, we’ll just say that the gut is essentially a mini-ecosystem inside of our bodies, where all the food processing takes place!

The Relationship Between Our Gut and Skin

Researchers from a 2018 study found that a healthy or unhealthy gut microbiome will impact other distant organs through complex immune mechanisms, one being the skin. Since our skin is the largest organ in our bodies, it’s no secret that certain foods are linked to skin conditions like acne.

The rule of thumb for understanding the relationship between gut and skin health is to recognize that we have trillions of bacteria floating around in our gut; some are bad, and some are good. 

Essentially, the more bad bacteria, the more skin issues you’ll notice popping up. Just like with an abundance of good bacteria, think probiotics and prebiotics, the more radiant your skin will appear.

Skin Conditions Linked to Gut Health

We can’t say that all skin conditions are necessarily linked to gut health, but more likely than not, the gut is a leading culprit. If you’re suffering from one of the more common skin conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis, it might be worth taking an internal healing approach and do a "gut check." 


The issue with finding the remedy to cure all acne is that the exact cause still remains elusive, and there could be many different factors. We’d recommend confiding in a dermatologist if you think your acne could be due to hormonal imbalances or other underlying health issues. 

Otherwise, since acne is an inflammatory skin condition, other factors like high stress, frequent mood swings, and bad bacteria in your gut could also be the root of acne. A 2019 study found a direct link between the brain, gut, and skin, meaning that the microbiomes in our gut certainly affect acne!

Eczema and Psoriasis

While eczema and psoriasis can be rather tricky conditions to diagnose, researchers seem to agree that inflammation in the gut can make these conditions worse. Common symptoms of these conditions include dry and flaky skin, which could be triggered by stress or foods. 

Consider eliminating foods like gluten, dairy, or soy from your diet, and focus on keeping your stress levels low, as research suggests an improved immune system leads to less inflammation.

Beauty Tips For Improving Gut Health and Achieving Radiant Skin

  • Eat plenty of fiber-rich foods to limit the growth of harmful microbes.
  • Consume and topically apply probiotics to your skin to restore the healthy bacteria.
  • Strive to use, safe, non toxic. plant based skincare products
  • Maintain balance in your lifestyle by finding time for self care, for movement, to rest, and to do more of what brings you joy!
